Taxi to Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee

Updated

From the arrivals hall at Ben Gurion to your hotel on the shore of the lake.

A taxi from Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) to Tiberias covers about 136 km, north on Road 6 and then east on Road 77 across the Lower Galilee to the lake. From Tel Aviv it is about 133 km. The Bazman Taxi driver follows your flight and takes you to the door of a lakeside hotel or a kibbutz guesthouse. If you want to see a pilgrim site such as Yardenit or Capernaum on arrival, add the stop when you book. The fixed price is agreed before you go.

Road 6 is a toll road, which a taxi takes at the passenger’s request; the next section explains what that means for your ride.

From the arrivals hall to the lake

Send us your flight number with the booking. The driver keeps track of the flight and, when you have your bags and are out of customs, phones you or writes on WhatsApp so you can agree where to meet. The steps between the aircraft door and the exit are in our Terminal 3 arrival guide.

From the airport the car heads north on Road 6 to the Tel Qashish interchange near Yokneam, then turns east onto Road 77, which crosses the Lower Galilee past the Golani interchange and ends in Tiberias. Road 77 has an interchange at Kafr Kanna, the village Christian tradition links with Cana, so a stop at the Wedding Church can be added to the drive.

Road 6 is a toll road. On a metered ride, a fixed supplement is added when the ride uses it at the passenger’s request. When we give you a fixed price, we tell you whether it includes the toll. If you would rather avoid Road 6, the driver can go north to Hadera and take Road 65 through Wadi Ara and Afula, joining Road 77 at the Golani interchange. From Tel Aviv that route is about the same length; from the airport it is longer.

Pilgrim sites around the Sea of Galilee

All of these lie on or near the shore of the lake, and any of them can be a stop on your ride or a day out from the hotel.

  • Capernaum

The ancient fishing village on the northern shore. Visitors see the white limestone synagogue from the 4th or 5th century, the modern church built over the house that tradition links to St Peter, and the red-domed Greek Orthodox church on the eastern side of the site.

  • Tabgha

On the north-western shore stand the Church of the Multiplication, with its mosaic of loaves and fish, and close by the Church of the Primacy of St Peter, built on rocks at the water’s edge.

  • Mount of Beatitudes

The hill on the north-western shore very near Tabgha, with the Franciscan Church of the Beatitudes, built in the late 1930s to a design by Antonio Barluzzi.

  • The Galilee boat at Ginosar

A wooden boat about 2,000 years old, uncovered in the lakebed during the 1986 drought and now shown at the Beit Yigal Allon Museum in Kibbutz Ginosar, about 12 km by road north of Tiberias.

  • Yardenit

The baptism site on the Jordan River, just south of where the river leaves the lake. Kibbutz Kinneret (Kvutzat Kinneret) runs it, and Christian pilgrims come here to be baptised.

A day around the lake from your hotel

If you are staying in Tiberias and want a driver for a day of visits, send us the plan: the hotel, the sites in the order you prefer, roughly how long you want at each and when you need to be back. Waiting at each site is part of the price, so with the full plan in hand we can quote one fixed price for the whole day.

Church and pilgrim groups travelling together can ride in a large taxi, a minibus or a coach; all of them are on our taxi and group transport services page. Tell us how many people and how many suitcases, and dispatch matches the vehicle by phone. Ask for child seats for the right ages when you book, and book a wheelchair-accessible taxi with a lift a day ahead. If part of the trip is spent in Nazareth, the taxi from Ben Gurion Airport to Nazareth page covers that leg.

Questions and answers

How much is a taxi from Ben Gurion Airport to Tiberias?

The fixed price for the 136 km or so is agreed before you go and depends on the date, the vehicle and any stop at a pilgrim site on the way. If the ride takes Road 6 at your request, we tell you with the price whether the toll is included. Send your flight number and hotel on WhatsApp and we reply with the price.

Can we stop at Capernaum or Yardenit on the way from the airport?

Yes. Add the stop when you book and say how long you want there; it is included in the fixed price we agree. Yardenit is at the southern end of the lake and Capernaum on the northern shore, so if you want both, we suggest the order with you.

Does the route to Tiberias use toll roads?

The usual route uses Road 6, a toll road that a taxi takes at the passenger’s request. When we quote a fixed price, we tell you whether the toll is included, and you can ask for the Road 65 route through Wadi Ara instead.

Our guesthouse is in a kibbutz on the eastern shore. Can you take us there?

Yes. Ein Gev on the eastern shore is about 146 km from the airport, by a route that passes south of the lake. Write the name of the kibbutz and of the guesthouse when you book.

Can you drive us back from Tiberias to the airport?

Yes, it is about 136 km. Send the flight number and we set the pickup so you reach the airport three hours before an international flight, as the Israel Airports Authority advises. Our Ben Gurion Airport taxi page covers the departures drop-off.

We are a pilgrim group with a lot of luggage. What vehicle will come?

Tell us how many travellers there are and how many large suitcases you have. Dispatch then matches the group with a large taxi, a minibus or a coach by phone.

Can we travel to Tiberias on a Saturday?

Only after Shabbat ends on Saturday evening; the Shabbat times for Tiberias are shown on this page. A Sunday ride works too.
