Tipping taxi drivers in Israel
Customs, not rules: what Israelis usually do, so you neither under-tip nor overdo it.
Tipping a taxi driver in Israel is not expected on an ordinary city ride. Most locals pay the fare and, at most, round it up. A small extra after a long airport run, or when the driver lifts heavy bags for you, is welcome and taken as a kind gesture, but no law or rule requires it. Restaurants work differently: around 10 to 12 percent for good service is the norm, and it is usually not added to the bill.
Taxis: what is customary
On a short metered ride, Israelis usually pay what the meter shows. Rounding up to a convenient figure is common and appreciated, and nobody will chase you for more. The Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality’s visitor site says the same: taxi drivers do not expect tips.
Longer rides are where a tip shows up more often. After a ride from Ben Gurion Airport, say to Jerusalem, or when the driver loads a stroller and a pile of suitcases, many passengers add a little on top. The same custom applies to taxis you hail in the street and to taxis you order through an app.
With a pre-booked fixed price, as with our airport taxis, the agreed price covers the ride. Adding a tip is entirely your choice.

Restaurants and the bill
Restaurant bills in Israel rarely include a service charge; it tends to appear only for large groups or private events. The 18 percent VAT already built into menu prices is a government tax and does not count as a tip.
Most restaurants can add the tip to a card payment, but many servers still prefer it in cash.
Practical tips
- Keep some small change
Rounding up is easiest with a few coins or a small note in your pocket.
- Ask for a receipt
The Hebrew word is kabala. Useful for expense claims after a business trip.

Questions and answers
Is a tip included in an Israeli taxi fare?
No. The meter shows the fare and its official supplements only. A tip, if you give one, comes on top.
Do I tip on rides booked through Gett or Yango?
The custom is the same as for any taxi: not expected on a short ride, welcome after a long one or when the driver helps with luggage.
Is it rude not to tip a taxi driver in Israel?
No. Most Israelis do not tip on ordinary city rides, and drivers do not expect it.
